Restoring Strength: The Repair of Fiber Reinforced Plastics (FRP)

Fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP), especially carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), are known for their strength, lightness and durability. But what happens when a part gets damaged? At aXpel composites we have the know-how to repair damaged FRP parts and restore them to their original performance.

1. Damage Assessment

The first step in repairing an FRP part is the damage assessment. The extent and type of damage is determined. This can be done visually or using more advanced methods such as ultrasound or thermographic techniques.

2. Preparation of the repair site

The repair site is prepared by removing the damaged fiber and matrix materials. This area is then carefully cleaned and prepared for repair.

3. Repair

The repair itself is done by applying new fiber and matrix materials to the preparation area. These materials are carefully selected and arranged to restore the original fiber orientation and material strength.

4. Curing and post-processing

After the repair materials are applied, they are cured with heat or UV light to strengthen the matrix and ensure the strength of the repaired area. After curing, the repaired area is reworked to remove any imperfections and restore the appearance of the original part.

5. Testing and Validation

Finally, the repaired part is carefully inspected to ensure that the repair was successful and the part is restored to its original strength and function.

FRP repair is a complex process that requires careful planning, specialized tools and materials, and specific expertise. At aXpel composites we are proud to offer this service and help our customers maximize the longevity and performance of their FRP parts.
